Kitty Ray Brown Featured in the Apple Gallery

Oct 1-31

Kitty Ray Brown Featured in the Apple Gallery The Stokes County Arts Council is featuring the artwork of Kitty Ray Brown at The Apple Gallery in Danbury. Her exhibit, on display throughout October, features Impressionist Landscape Paintings, Oils and Archival Photography. Brown worked in the Art Department at Pembroke University and spent decades designing fine jewelry using precious stones and metals. After retirement, she became a professional photographer, taught by Jesse Moore. More recently, Brown has studied Impressionist Landscape Art under Craig Richards. She has won several awards from contests sponsored by the Spencer-Penn Centre in Virginia and has had her flower photographs made into woven tapestries for hotels and resorts around the world. “I have owned and used a camera since my early teens. I carry it constantly and make pictures every day. Now that I create Impressionist Landscape Paintings, I use my photographs as inspiration,” said Brown. An Artist Reception and Meet and Greet will be held on Friday, October 19th from 5:30 to 8pm at the Apple Gallery located at 500 Main Street, Danbury. Reception is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Stokes Arts at 336-593-8159.

Tony Brown Returns Home for Homecoming Celebration

Oct 17-20

COME HEAR NORTH CAROLINA TO HONOR ICONIC COUNTRY MUSIC PRODUCER TONY BROWN -- This October, North Carolina is rolling out the red carpet for one of its own: legendary country music producer, Tony Brown. The Stokes County Arts Council, in tandem with the North Carolina Arts Council’s 2019 state-wide campaign: Come Hear NC, are celebrating Brown’s accomplishments with a 4-day Homecoming Celebration from October 17 to October 20. Born and raised in Walkertown, Brown got his start playing keys for Elvis before becoming President of MCA Records Nashville. During that time, MCA Nashville was awarded Label of the Year for 10 years straight. Brown went on to produce over 100 number one singles for the most well-known names in country music: George Strait, Reba McIntyre, Trisha Yearwood, Lyle Lovett and countless others. “The first time I heard the name Tony Brown, I was twelve. My grandpa told me, ‘Little Tony, from the Brown gospel family, was playing piano for Elvis.’ Then in the 90’s, every country artist I listened to had Tony’s name listed as the producer. I decided then that if I were ever in a position to celebrate Tony’s achievements here in his home state, I would,” says Eddy McGee, Executive Director of the Stokes County Arts Council. “It’s long overdue but well deserved!” Tony Brown’s Homecoming Celebration will kick-off on Thursday, October 17 with a reception at Moore’s Springs Manor. The festivities continue Friday at the Stokes County Arts Council with a performance by local NC musicians of songs Brown has produced during his career. Brown will be around town on Saturday signing copies of his book, Elvis, Strait, to Jesus, which chronicles his journey through the music industry. The celebration culminates on Sunday, October 20 with a concert at Walkertown High School. “The roots of American music run deep in North Carolina and Tony Brown is one of NC’s true musical heroes,” says Susi Hamilton, Secretary for the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. “We are beyond thrilled to welcome Tony home and celebrate his incredible career.” Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime celebration! Class of 2020 Leadership Patrick County

Sep 1 - May 31

NOMINATE SOMEONE OR APPLY YOURSELF - DEADLINE SEPTEMBER 3 The Reynolds Homestead is accepting applications for the 2020 class of Leadership Patrick County. This innovative program is designed to develop the leadership potential of citizens in the county. Participants will learn about county government, education, nonprofits, businesses and tourist attractions in Patrick County and broaden their perspectives on civic leadership and community issues through direct interaction with community leaders and agencies in our area. During September 2019 through May 2020, participants will attend monthly day-long meetings focused on different aspects of the community, including trips to different communities within the county. This year, the AIR Shift curriculum will be incorporated into the program to facilitate the development of community projects the participants will create and implement in the coming year. One evening each month, participants will attend a meeting such as a County Board of Supervisors meeting. The program emphasizes professional development with training in team building, collaboration, consensus building, design thinking, project management, communication, leadership styles. The first meeting is an orientation retreat focused on team building, and identifying leadership styles. In January the participants will enjoy an overnight visit to Richmond to meet with our local delegate and senator and savor a meal with Reynolds family members sponsored by the Richard S. Reynolds foundation. The final meeting will be a commencement ceremony, presentation of community projects, and a celebration. The program seeks a group of 12 men and women from diverse ethnic and professional backgrounds, each possessing strong potential as a future community leader. Applicants must be 21 years old or older to participate. If employed, participants are required to have the permission of their employer to participate. Nominations are being sought, and individuals may choose to nominate themselves. Tuition is $150.00. Chamber of Commerce members receive a $25 discount. Tuition covers all meals, transportation to meetings and accommodations for the overnight stay in Richmond. Because it is important that everyone has an opportunity to apply, a limited number of scholarships are available to those who be unable to attend otherwise. Applications should be delivered to the Reynolds Homestead by Tuesday, September 3, 2019. Applications can be submitted via email to jws@vt.edu. The program is limited to 12 participants, so early applications are encouraged. For more information, contact one of the program coordinators: Julie Walters Steele - phone: 276.694.7181 ext. 23 or email: jws@vt.edu Lisa Martin - phone: 276.694.7181 ext. 22 or email: martinlm@vt.edu Sarah Wray - phone 276.694.7181 ext. 27 or email: wrayse88@vt.edu
